self-taught graphic designer roadmap: AI vs. Beginners – Which One Actually Wins? – Disinique

After 1 month of self-study, I started my graphic design journey. Now I'm in my 18th year, with 18 years of social insurance contributions.

Many beginners keep asking: since AI can generate images, do I still need to learn design? Today, with my 18 years of hands-on experience, I'll give you the most honest answer: AI can make pretty pictures, but it can't produce design that is practical and market-ready.

Recently I was working on an exhibition render—one 15m x 4m, one 5m x 4m, with nearly 20 products. I spent a long time on AI (it was maddening). I fed it text descriptions, logos, and product images. In the end, none of what it gave me was usable. It missed things, made products look like nothing, and distorted the logos. This made me want to tell beginners: pretty is useless; usable is what matters. But what we create is different—high resolution, every necessary principle applied. Expecting AI to handle that is really asking too much.

Can AI generate such practical design work?

No. All it produces is flashy nonsense—if even that. Because we don't just make things beautiful; we bring creativity, deliver the full message, and create practical designs, not rough outlines. That said, AI does serve as a helpful aid for us.

Many beginners chase trends and effects right away, which can easily lead them astray. With my solid work experience, I tell you this: design is not just about looking good—it's about being practical. Mark these words: practical, down-to-earth.

Alright, that's it for this week. Have a great weekend, and I'm heading off work now.
